An Estimate of the Expected IRAC Data Rate (2/28/01)

The following is an estimate of the IRAC data rate for pipeline resource planning. In the following one DCE is defined to mean exactly one 256x256 IRAC image.

Typical Data Rate:

The typical data rate was computed from a preliminary test schedule generated for the early mission based on the GTO AOR submissions. It is based on 19 PAOs roughly 12 hours in duration each, occurring over a month's time period.

The mean data rate is 7000 DCEs per 12-hour PAO. The median is 9000 DCEs.

Histogram of the total number of DCEs in a given PAO.

Maximum Data Rate:

Ultimately, IRAC is limited by the data compression rate. This limiting rate (currently) is 4 DCEs every 15 seconds. Using this, the worst case rate is 11520 DCEs per 12-hour PAO. This is the maximum sustained data rate IRAC can support.
